It really depends on what you can really afford. I would go for the best lens you can, even if it means saving an extra month or two. The equivalent sigma version lens is good (I have it for the sony mount) but it's not a great lens and you will wish you saved some more pennies to get a better lens. Is the Nikon lens faster, as in the aperture? is it f2.8 or somewhere around there? email me a link to the two lenses your are considering and I'll give you the advantages and disadvantages of each for you... and I'll make it into a post on this site for everyone's benefit Hi Rebecca. I have recently started using the Nikon D40 and have a Sigma 70-300mm lens. So I want to upgrade to a auto focus lens, but do I go for the equivalent sigma one or one of the VR Nikon ones such as the 55 - 200mm? You might then be able to get a better deal from an online store if you were thinking of buying one. If you are around Manchester then there is the large Jessops on Deansgate where they have lots of cameras to look at, and hopefully some knowledgeable staff too.
